Around July 18 a heat wave began to build up but the cool nighty prevented water stress on the wines again. However, the earlier accumulation of water reserves prevented water stress. The whole Bordelais saw a period of very dry weather for two months. At the start of June, frequent rain intensified the pressure of mildew. Finally all the vines came into bloom at the end of May without any significant coulure or millerandage. Budding developed unevenly, very much depending on the locations although the coo and humid weather in April had not a very significant impact on slowing down the growth of the vines. These conditions led to a premature budbreak. In a tasting of 650 winesĢ020 began with mild temperatures even breaking temperature record highs at the beginning of February. Despite low yields, the botrytised sweet white wines are of excellent quality." The development of Botrytis cinerea in Sauternes was delayed by the cool summer and eventually triggered by rainfall in mid-September.ġ0. The wines are elegant, however the well made ones have an excellent persistence, depth and length. One could say the wines are reminiscent of the 80s, however made with more experience and the modern techniques today. Bordeaux is back to a more moderate alcohol level and the style is lighter and more elegant. This years "en primeur" tasting seemed like a journey in time. The wines of Château Pichon Baron are full-bodied, rich and spicy with excellent concentration, complexity and elegance. The grapes are meticulously sorted, fermented in stainless vats and aged in 80% new French oak barrels for 18 months. Only Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are put into the Grand Vin, most of which come from the 40 hectare vineyards on the plateau of Pauillac over deep, gravel soil. The 73 hectares of vines are planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Today, the estate is owned and operated by the AXA Group and run by Christian Seely, who has made Pichon Baron a leading Pauillac estate. In 1855, Château Pichon Baron was ranked as a 2er Cru in the Bordeaux Classification. The estate was spilt up when Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville divided his estate amongst his five children: the two sons received what would become Pichon Baron, and his three daughters what became Pichon Lalande.
